Information for schools

Online learning package

New Zealand Maths are hosting a website with 'New Coins' activities for year 1 to 8 students and teachers.

The site contains:

  • interactive coin games;
  • activities around the new coins; and
  • information about the old and new coins.

Plastic Money

Schools may wish to update any sets of plastic money as the old plastic 10, 20 and 50 cent coins being used by schools are no longer the correct size, and the 10 cent coin is not the correct colour. These can be sourced through suppliers of educational learning resources.

Resources

Posters, booklets and other resources that explain the coinage changes can be downloaded and displayed as needed.

All primary schools have been sent a 'Small Change' information pack. The pack includes:

  • Plastic samples of the new coins
  • Change for the better poster
  • New Zealand Currency poster
  • Information about the 'new coins' website-based teaching and learning programme.

Explaining Currency booklets

All primary schools have received three Explaining Currency booklets. The booklet walks readers through the history New Zealand's currency, describes the banknote and coin designs, how banknotes and coins are made, the security features and the life-cycle of a typical bank note. This publication is designed for use by the general public but it is provided to schools as a source of useful background information.

For copies of the booklet and the New Zealand's Currency poster please contact the Reserve Bank Knowledge Centre, knowledge@rbnz.govt.nz, 64 4 4722029.

Fundraising Opportunities

The introduction of the new coins presents fundraising opportunities for schools; research indicates that most New Zealand families have some stored silver coins.
